If you have searched for RRR or Baahubali, you have probably seen the word "Tollywood." Then you may have found Satyajit Ray's classics described the same way and wondered how one word covers both. The answer to what is Tollywood is that it is a nickname shared by two different Indian film industries: Telugu-language cinema, centered in Hyderabad, and Bengali-language cinema, centered in the Tollygunge neighborhood of Kolkata.

This explainer covers where the name comes from, how the two industries differ, essential films from each, and where US viewers can watch them legally.

Where the name "Tollywood" comes from

The name started in Kolkata, not Hyderabad. Tollygunge, a neighborhood in south Kolkata, has been home to Bengali film studios since the early sound era, and "Tollywood" is a blend of Tollygunge and Hollywood. It is generally considered the first of India's "-wood" nicknames, older than "Bollywood" for Hindi cinema in Mumbai.

Later, the Telugu film industry adopted the same nickname, which some link to the T in Telugu. Today, if someone in the US says "Tollywood," they usually mean Telugu cinema, which has become a box-office powerhouse with global hits. In West Bengal and Bangladesh, the word still primarily means Bengali cinema. Our site keeps both: browse Tollywood (Telugu), Tollywood (Bengali), or the combined Tollywood collection.

Telugu cinema: the blockbuster factory

Telugu is spoken by tens of millions of people, mainly in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The industry is known for big-budget spectacle, star-driven "mass" entertainers, heavily choreographed action, and songs that become national hits.

The films that put Telugu cinema on the world map

  • RRR (2022): S. S. Rajamouli's period action epic about two revolutionaries, starring N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan. Its song "Naatu Naatu" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a first for an Indian production.
  • Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017): Rajamouli's two-part fantasy saga starring Prabhas. It became a pan-Indian phenomenon and proved that a regional-language film could dominate nationwide.
  • Eega (2012): an inventive revenge fantasy in which the hero is reincarnated as a housefly. It is a great example of Telugu cinema's playful side.
  • Magadheera (2009): a reincarnation romance-action film, also directed by Rajamouli, that set new technical standards for the industry.
  • Pushpa: The Rise (2021) and Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024): Allu Arjun's rugged crime sagas, huge hits that show the appeal of the "mass hero" style.

What to expect as a new viewer

Telugu blockbusters often run close to three hours, include an intermission break, which is printed on screen in many prints, and freely mix action, romance, comedy and musical numbers. If you enjoy the operatic scale of superhero films, start with RRR. Our guide to South Indian cinema puts Telugu films in context alongside Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada cinema.

Bengali cinema: art-house giants and modern variety

Bengali cinema has a very different reputation. Kolkata was a center of the Indian parallel cinema movement, which favored realism and literary adaptation, and it gave the world one of cinema's great directors, Satyajit Ray.

The Apu Trilogy and Satyajit Ray

Ray's debut, Pather Panchali (1955), follows a poor family in rural Bengal through the eyes of a young boy, Apu. It was followed by Aparajito (1956) and The World of Apu (1959), which together form the Apu Trilogy, consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made. Ray's other masterpieces include The Music Room (1958) and Charulata (1964). In 1992, he received an Honorary Academy Award for his lifetime of work.

The Wikipedia biography of Satyajit Ray is a good overview of his career, which also included writing, music and illustration.

Other major Bengali filmmakers include Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, whose films are essential for anyone interested in world cinema.

Bengali cinema today

Contemporary Bengali films span thrillers, family dramas, detective stories and comedies, and Bangladesh's industry, sometimes nicknamed Dhallywood, also produces Bengali-language films. Streaming has helped. Services such as Hoichoi specialize in Bengali films and series, though availability varies by region.

A five-film Tollywood starter watchlist

If you want to sample both industries in a single month, try this order. It moves from the most accessible film to the most demanding:

  1. RRR (Telugu): pure spectacle, friendship and music. If you enjoy it, you will enjoy most Rajamouli films.
  2. Eega (Telugu): a lighter, shorter-feeling fantasy that shows how inventive Telugu genre films can be.
  3. Baahubali: The Beginning (Telugu): a mythic fantasy epic. Watch it with the sequel close at hand, because the cliffhanger is famous.
  4. The World of Apu (Bengali): the final part of Ray's trilogy works surprisingly well on its own as a moving story of love, grief and adulthood.
  5. Pather Panchali (Bengali): go back to where Apu's story begins. After the previous films, its patience and simplicity feel like a revelation.

Watching blockbusters and art-house classics side by side is the best way to understand why one nickname has come to mean two very different film cultures. Both show how much range Indian cinema has beyond the Hindi films most Americans know.
