Film Genres Explained: A Beginner's Guide to Finding Movies You'll Love

Every streaming app sorts its library into rows labeled Action, Comedy, Drama, Thriller and so on. Those labels are film genres, and once you understand how they work, choosing what to watch gets much easier. Genres are not strict rules. They are shared expectations between filmmakers and audiences about tone, structure and the kind of experience a movie will deliver.

This beginner's guide walks through the major genres you will meet on US streaming services, the subgenres that matter, and some practical ways to use genre labels to find films that fit your mood. Along the way we point to well-known examples, with links to their pages here on ReelsMasala so you can check trailers and legal viewing options.

What is a film genre?

A genre is a category of movies that share recognizable elements: settings, character types, plot patterns, visual style or emotional effect. A Western is defined largely by its setting and era. A horror film is defined by the feeling it aims to produce, which is fear. A musical is defined by a storytelling technique, characters who sing.

Film scholars have argued about genre definitions for decades, and the Wikipedia overview of film genres is a good starting point if you want the academic side. For everyday viewers, the useful idea is simpler: a genre label is a promise. A romantic comedy promises a love story with laughs and, usually, a hopeful ending. A thriller promises tension. When a movie breaks that promise on purpose, as many great films do, knowing the genre helps you appreciate the twist.

The major film genres

Action and adventure

Action films are built around physical conflict: chases, fights, rescues and set pieces. Adventure films overlap but focus on a journey, often to exotic or fantastical places. Superhero movies, spy films and many blockbusters live here. If you enjoy momentum and spectacle, browse our action movies and adventure movies collections.

Comedy

Comedies aim to make you laugh, but the style varies enormously: slapstick, satire, dark comedy, mockumentary and the romantic comedy. Comedy is also the genre most tied to culture and language, which is why a hit in one country can fall flat in another. Our comedy collection and the guide to the best comedy movies on HBO Max are good places to start.

Drama

Drama is the broadest genre, covering stories driven by character and emotional conflict rather than spectacle. Most Best Picture winners are dramas, from Moonlight to Oppenheimer. If a movie does not fit anywhere else, it is often labeled drama by default.

Horror

Horror is defined by its goal: to frighten or unsettle. Subgenres include supernatural horror, slashers, creature features, folk horror and psychological horror. Horror also crosses easily into other genres. Ridley Scott's Alien, pictured above, is as much a horror film as a science fiction one. See our guide to the best horror movies on Prime Video for picks across subgenres.

Science fiction and fantasy

Science fiction imagines how technology, science or the future could change human life. Fantasy uses magic and invented worlds. Both are "speculative" genres, and many movies blend them. Our sci-fi collection and the list of the best sci-fi movies on Netflix cover space operas, time-travel puzzles and dystopias.

Thriller, crime and mystery

Thrillers keep you on edge with danger and suspense. Crime films follow criminals or the people chasing them. Mysteries invite you to solve a puzzle along with the characters. The three overlap constantly. A heist film is a crime story, and a whodunit is a mystery.

Animation

Animation is technically a medium rather than a genre, because animated films can be comedies, dramas or adventures. In practice, streaming services treat it as a genre, so you will see it labeled that way. Pixar's Inside Out is a family comedy and a surprisingly deep drama about emotions at the same time.

Romance, musical, war, Western and documentary

These are smaller but distinct genres. Romance centers on a love story. Musicals tell the story partly through song. War films depict combat and its aftermath. Westerns are set on the American frontier. Documentaries are nonfiction, and our documentary collection is a good place to explore them.

Subgenres and hybrids: where it gets interesting

Very few movies belong to just one genre. TMDB, the database behind our catalog, typically assigns two to four genres to each title. Christopher Nolan's The Prestige is listed as drama, mystery and science fiction, and each label tells you something true about it.

Some common hybrids you will meet:

  • Action comedy: buddy-cop films and many superhero movies.
  • Romantic comedy (rom-com): the most popular hybrid of all.
  • Sci-fi horror: Alien, The Thing and their descendants.
  • Crime drama: prestige TV staples like Breaking Bad.
  • Horror comedy: films such as Zombieland and The Cabin in the Woods.

Subgenres are even more specific: found-footage horror, heist films, legal dramas, coming-of-age stories, disaster movies and so on. Learning a few subgenre names makes searching far more precise than browsing a giant "Drama" row.

Genre outside Hollywood

Genre conventions differ around the world. Indian popular cinema is often called "masala" because a single film mixes action, romance, comedy, family drama and musical numbers. That is where our site's name comes from. Our explainers on Bollywood movies on Netflix and Tollywood explain how that works. Korean dramas have their own conventions too, covered in our K-drama guide for beginners.

How to use genres to pick what to watch

  1. Start with mood, not genre. Want to laugh, be scared, cry or think? Map the mood to a genre: comedy, horror, drama or science fiction.
  2. Use two genres instead of one. Searching for "sci-fi thriller" or "family comedy" narrows thousands of titles to a manageable list.
  3. Check the rating and content guidance. Genre tells you the style, not the intensity. Our explainer on MPA ratings and TV parental guidelines helps with that.
  4. Look at audience and critic scores together. Our guide to IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic explains what each number means.
  5. Follow directors who play with genre. Filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Bong Joon Ho and Jordan Peele bend genre rules, and their films are good gateways into new categories.

The most common film genres are action, adventure, comedy, drama, horror, science fiction, fantasy, thriller, crime, mystery, romance, animation, documentary, musical, war and Western. Most movies combine two or more of them.

Is animation a genre?

Strictly speaking, animation is a medium, because animated films can be comedies, dramas or adventures. Streaming services and databases like TMDB still list it as a genre because viewers often browse that way.

What is the difference between a thriller and a horror movie?

A thriller's main goal is suspense and tension, often around danger or a crime. A horror movie's main goal is fear, often through supernatural threats, monsters or disturbing imagery. Many films sit in between.

What does "masala film" mean?

A masala film is a popular Indian movie that mixes several genres, such as action, romance, comedy, drama and song-and-dance numbers, in a single story. The term comes from the Hindi word for a blend of spices.

How many genres can one movie have?

There is no fixed limit. Databases like TMDB usually tag a movie with two to four genres to describe it accurately.

Availability and release dates are based on TMDB/JustWatch data for the United States at the time of writing and can change. Always confirm on the provider's site. Read our editorial policy.
